Re family connection with 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment -- my mom's first cousin was John Dowdy, who was commanding the 1st Battalion at the time of his death. (He was my grandmother's sister's son.) They were all pretty close since they were from a large extended farm family in Georgia. Mom grew up at Fort Benning -- her stepfather was in the 82nd Airborne. John came by to visit, both before he was in the Army and after he joined -- each time he received training at Fort Benning. Then he was sent overseas with his regiment in January 1944. My great-aunt Eva was never quite the same after he was killed in September 1944.
